Jean-Michel Basquiat’s contributions to the history of art and his explorations of multifaceted cultural phenomena––including music, the Black experience, pop culture, Black American sports figures, literature, and other sources––will be showcased through immersive environments providing unique insight into the late artist’s creative life and his singular voice that propelled a social and cultural narrative that continues to this day.
Organized, curated and Executive Produced by The Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat as adminstrated by his sisters Jean-Michel's sisters Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, this exhibition of over 200 never-before-seen and rarely shown paintings, drawings, multimedia presentations, ephemera, and artifacts tell the story of Jean-Michel from an intimate perspective, intertwining his artistic endeavors with his personal life, influences, and the times in which he lived.

The Grand LA is a visionary public-private partnership with the Los Angeles Grand Avenue Authority to revitalize downtown LA's cultural and civic core with a mix of commercial, retail, cultural and residential apartments stitched together with grand public spaces and world-class architecture. Nearby arts and culture venues include the Music Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Colburn School of Music, The Broad Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art, forming a dynamic mixed-use district fitting for the cultural center of Los Angeles.

Parking is available at The Grand in the lower-level parking garage. Self-parking with validation is Free for VIP ticket holders and available for $4.50 for three hours for timed tickets. After the three-hour self-validation, rates increase to $5.00 each hour to a max of $42.00.

Book Signing With Lisane Basquiat
Join us this Thursday, July 13th for a King Pleasure© Pop-up at Maxfield LA, one of the locations featured on Jean-Michel’s LA Map in gallery one of the exhibition. During his time in LA (1982 – 1984) Jean-Michel shopped at Maxfield for high-end fashion. On one occasion, he purchased a raw silk Versace suit which he wore out of the store with cuffs pinned.

York Art Scene
Jean-Michel Basquiat was a vital part of the New York Art scene in the late 1970s and 1980s. He first met Kenny Scharf in 1979 at the School of Visual Arts. Subsequently they were exhibited in the same group shows and their paths crossed innumerable times in the downtown clubs and the East Village art scene.
Both Scharf and Jean-Michel produced commissions for the Palladium nightclub. Jeffrey Deitch, art dealer and curator first encountered Jean-Michel's work in 1978 and in 1980 wrote the first mention of Jean-Michel's work in the press. Since then, he has remained deeply supportive of his work.

To celebrate, EMPIRE is hosting an album release party in partnership with Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure©. Asake's Work of Art Paint & Sip Party will invite fans to create their own "Work of Art" with an exclusive guided painting session drawn from inspiration of the artwork seen within the King Pleasure exhibition in Los Angeles and the Asake single titled "Basquiat".
Tickets include access to view nearly 200 rarely seen paintings, drawings, ephemera and artifacts from the Jean-Michel Basquiat curated from the family estate, guided paint & sip*, music from the Work of Art album, and curated cocktails.
Three guided Paint & Sip seated sessions, limited to the first 120 guests who register for each session upon arrival. Last entry is 8:00 pm. Gallery doors close promptly at 8:30pm. 21+

Celebrate Jean-Michel Basquiat and Hip Hop’s 50th Anniversary with an exhibition viewing and panel discussion hosted by Jeanine Heriveaux and Lisane Basquiat, moderated by MSNBC's Ari Melber. Panelists include Rapsody, Yo-Yo and Doug E. Fresh. Guests are also invited to join us for an exclusive after party featuring Just Blaze.
Music was always a strong influence on Jean-Michel’s paintings – jazz, bebop and hip hop – musical genres that resonated with him and the subject of many of his works. Stylistically, his works often deconstruct and reassemble subjects, similar to the cadence of hip hop. And in his use of language - challenging preconceived ideology - is something that hip hop and Jean-Michel shared.
In 1983 Jean-Michel produced and arranged “Beat-Bop” with K Rob and Rammellzee. Jean-Michel also designed the album cover. It was featured in the movie Wild Style and was ranked by Rolling Stone among the 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs of all time.

experience
Between 1982 and 1984, Jean-Michel enjoyed frequent trips to Los Angeles, staying for months at a time. He loved working and living in LA, made many friends, and appreciated the respite from New York and opportunity to focus on his art. During those years, he worked and lived with Larry Gagosian for a time and had two solo exhibitions at Gagosian gallery. He subsequently maintained a studio space in Venice that Fred Hoffman found for him, and created a suite of prints with Hoffman.
Tamra Davis was a film student at Los Angeles City College and a gallery assistant who filmed interviews with Jean-Michel during this time that became her acclaimed documentary The Radiant Child. She also drove him around LA since he never learned to drive.

Jean-Michel Basquiat lived in the spirit of generosity. Understanding that artists need support in order to flourish, he created and fostered a sense of community by actively investing in the work of fellow artists and encouraging them to pursue their ambitions. Elevating other artists was important to him, and integral to how he showed up in the world.
Join curator A.J. Girard, alongside Jean-Michel’s sisters Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux (co-administrators of the Jean-Michel Basquiat Estate), as they host an intimate talk with an impressive array of multidisciplinary artists. Laci Jordan, Alfonso Gonzalez Jr., Murjoni Merriweather and Deun Ivory will discuss their work and personal journey making art in today’s world.
